On May 11, Xin Changxing, Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee; and Liu Xiaotao, Governor of Jiangsu Province visited the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Physical Sciences, emphasizing the need to deeply study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech at the symposium on strengthening basic research. They highlighted the importance of adhering to the "Four Orientations" strategy, fully leveraging Jiangsu's advantages, continuously optimizing the layout of basic research, and striving to enhance innovation capabilities to better serve the country's high-level scientific self-reliance and self-improvement. Accompanying the visit were Tan Tieniu, Chair of Nanjing University CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); and Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of the CAS.
At the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Physical Sciences, Xin Changxing and Liu Xiaotao entered the laboratories to gain an in-depth understanding of the development history of the physics discipline at NJU, the construction of major research platforms, and the theoretical research, talent cultivation, and application of results at the research center. They interacted with academicians, experts, and young faculty and students. Researchers reported that the provincial government has optimized the project application mechanism for scientific research and increased support for young talents, which has led to a strong sense of achievement among the staff. Xin Changxing expressed his gratification upon seeing the continuous development of the physics discipline at NJU and the emergence of new talents. He encouraged everyone to focus on research, strive for excellence, dare to raise new questions, explore new fields, and forge new paths, achieving greater breakthroughs in original innovation and tackling key core technologies with perseverance and determination.
During the investigation, Xin Changxing emphasized that the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating, highlighting the strategic and pioneering position of basic research even more. There is a need to further enhance the sense of urgency, responsibility, and mission, and to strengthen basic research with greater intensity and more practical measures, advancing the integrated development of education, technology, and talent. He called for the establishment of a categorized evaluation system and incentive mechanisms, creating an open, inclusive, and failure-tolerant innovation environment, and building a long-term, stable policy support and guarantee system. He advocated for strong support for young talents and the broad mobilization of various forces to significantly elevate the level of basic research in the province.
It is understood that the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Physical Sciences is primarily constructed based on Nanjing University. It focuses on key scientific issues in the field of topological physics and related interdisciplinary areas, aiming to create a physics research center with international influence and a high ground for talent aggregation, producing significant original achievements in the field of topological physics, and becoming an important component of the national scientific and technological innovation system and a backbone force serving the country's cutting-edge technological development.
