On November 22, 2025, the award ceremony for the 17th Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award was held in Beijing. The French Ambassador to China, Bertrand Lortholary, along with renowned French writer Leïla Slimani and other distinguished guests, attended the ceremony. Huang Hong, a professor of the Department of French, School of Foreign Studies, Nanjing University, won the Literature Award for her translation of Not Everybody Lives the Same Way (written by Jean-Paul Dubois, published by Century Wenjing Shanghai People’s Publishing House).
The work is translated from the book that won the 2019 Prix Goncourt in France. Melancholic yet luminous, the novel masterfully weaves together dark humor and harsh reality, vividly depicting the life of an ordinary man who slowly collapses under the weight of fate yet strives to rebuild himself.
The judging panel of the Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award gave high praise to the quality of the translation. The panel also acknowledged Professor Huang Hong’s longstanding contributions to promoting French literature in China.
Established in 2009, the Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award is one of the most significant honors in China’s translation community. Named in memory of the renowned translator Fu Lei, the award honors one literary work and one social sciences work each year translated from French.
In 2023, Associate Professor Zhang Lu of the French Department won the Literature Award at the 15th Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award for her translation of Alma. In 2024, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of China-France relations, Professor Cao Danhong and Tenure-Track Associate Professor Shi Xueying were awarded the 16th Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award in the social sciences and literature categories respectively. Prior to this, several graduates of the French Department of Nanjing University had their translated works shortlisted for and won the Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award, reflecting NJU’s contributions to cultural exchanges between China and France.
