On May 15, a symposium commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the "May 17 Speech" and Building of Independent Knowledge System of Chinese Economics was held at Nanjing University's Gulou Campus. Xu Ying, Member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Head of the Publicity Department, along with Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Renowned experts and scholars in the fields of humanities and social sciences from across the country gathered to explore strategies for "explaining the Chinese path with Chinese theories and interpreting the Chinese miracle with Chinese scholarship." At the symposium, four new books were officially released, including Development Economics of China, authored by Hong Yinxing, former Party Secretary of Nanjing University and University Distinguished Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences. The "Nanjing University Institute of Humanistic Economics" was also inaugurated during the event.
Xu Ying pointed out that since the new era, General Secretary Xi Jinping has delivered a series of important speeches on building an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences, from the strategic perspective of the long-term development of the Party and the nation, as well as the sustainable development of Chinese civilization and culture. These speeches have charted the course for the prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences. Xu expressed hope that researchers in philosophy and social sciences would base their studies on China's realities, integrate with Jiangsu's practices, and continue to deepen the study, promotion, and interpretation of the Party's innovative theories. By using the vivid practices of economic and social development, they should tell the story of Chinese modernization, consistently advocating the "bright outlook on China's economy." Xu also emphasized adhering to the guidance of the Party's innovative theories, focusing on the construction of an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences, and continuously advancing knowledge, theoretical, and methodological innovations. This would better promote the international dissemination of original academic achievements, enhancing the global influence of Chinese theories, thoughts, and scholarship.
Tan Zhemin noted that as a major hub for research in Chinese philosophy and social sciences, NJU takes guidance from General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speeches and letters, firmly upholding its role as the main force in philosophy and social sciences research and as the main platform for theoretical innovation. The university has made significant achievements in advancing the construction of an independent knowledge system, improving advisory capabilities, and contributing to modern civilization. The release of the new books and the establishment of the Institute of Humanistic Economics further highlight the political awareness and commitment of NJU's economics discipline and scholars, which will propel the better and faster development of Chinese economics. Looking ahead, the university will join hands with peers in academia to focus on major issues in Chinese modernization, continuing to push forward innovation in theories, paradigms, and methodologies, striving to take the lead and set an example in building an independent knowledge system for China.
