On February 2, Nanjing University held its 2026 New Year Symposium on Gulou Campus. Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); along with Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of the CAS, gathered with academicians from the two academies, university distinguished professors in humanities and social sciences, honorary distinguished professors, and former leaders to review the past and discuss future development.
Tan Tieniu expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the university to the attending former leaders and experts for their dedicated support and selfless contributions to NJU's development, offering them New Year blessings and high respect. He stated that the insightful and valuable suggestions made by everyone regarding the high-quality development of the university will be carefully reviewed and integrated into the university's "15th Five-Year Plan," "Forging Ahead Initiative 2.0" scheme, and 2026 work. The university leadership team as well as all Faculty and staff will work hard to live up to everyone's expectations and care.
Tan Tieniu pointed out that in the past year, the university's Party committee focused on three major tasks and ten aspects of work, successfully completing the main goals of the "14th Five-Year Plan" and "Forging Ahead Initiative 1.0", making steady progress in building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and achieving fruitful results. The year 2026 marks the beginning of the "15th Five-Year Plan," a crucial year for the three-year action plan for building a strong educational nation, and a pivotal year for implementing "Forging Ahead Initiative 2.0", accelerating the construction of a world-class Nanjing University with Chinese characteristics, and achieving breakthroughs.
Tan Tieniu emphasized that continuing NJU's glorious legacy is a lifelong commitment worthy of full dedication. Today's NJU thrives due to the profound concern and strong support of former leaders and experts; the future success of NJU requires their guidance and spiritual leadership. The university's Party Committee will continue to provide a conducive environment for research, work, and life, acting as a solid support. He hopes that former leaders and experts will continue to focus on and support the university's reform and development, leveraging their wisdom in teaching, research, management, and resource gathering to contribute to the university's growth and national rejuvenation.
Tan Zhemin summarized NJU's main work and educational achievements in 2025 across nine areas: 1. deepened strategic planning; 2. academic construction reached new heights; 3. talent cultivation showed remarkable results; 4. team building improved in quality and quantity; 5. scientific innovation delivered frequent successes; 6. humanities and social sciences achieved fruitful results; 7. open education achieved breakthroughs; 8. multi-campus educational framework continuously improved; 9. livelihood services continuously enhanced.
Attending academicians, university distinguished professors in humanities and social sciences, honorary distinguished professors, and former leaders expressed that NJU's achievements over the past year were hard-earned, greatly encouraging and inspiring them with confidence in NJU's future development. They shared their views and suggestions on topics such as top-level design, interdisciplinary integration, scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship, talent cultivation, team building, educational framework, campus development, and teacher ethics, showcasing their deep affection and responsibility for the university's prosperity.
The meeting was chaired by Jiao Ruihua, Vice Chair of NJU CPC Council. University leaders Suo Wenbin, Zhou Zhihua, Li Bin, Sun Leqiang, and responsible persons from relevant university units attended the symposium.
