On March 16, 2025, the Graduate Student Union of Nanjing University organized a Guqin (Chinese Zither) Experience Class at Nanjing Cultural Hall with its theme named "Resonance of Strings and Songs, Harmony Across the Seas." More than 30 students from 8 countries participated.
Zhou Qian, a young Guqin master, member of the Nanjing Guqin Association, and head of the Guqin Project at the Nanjing Cultural Hall's National and Folk Cultural Heritage Protection Center, along with three young Guqin artists taught the students. They guided them in exploring the 3,000-year history of the Guqin and the cultural significance of its seven strings.
Teacher Zhou Qian first introduced the history of the Guqin, allowing the students to experience its unique sounds up close. During the session on notation and rhythm, the teachers explained how to read the simplified notation and showed the differences between duple and triple meters.
Then, Zhou Qian presented the basic playing skills of the GuQin and demonstrated them professionally. He emphasized, "The strength of the right hand should be moderate, avoiding being too light or unstable, and maintaining steadiness." Guided by the four teachers, the students imitated and practiced. The GuQin experience activity ended with the rendition of the famous piece: Flowing Water.
